This device will be capable of performing 40% biaxial stretching of a cell culture in a cyclic periodic manner with customizable profile (sinusoidal, sawtooth, etc.). The device must be able to fit in a cell culture incubator and thus have the durability to withstand the physiological heat and humidity. It must maintain calibration over a period of weeks and/or be able to be recalibrated in 5-10 minutes. Unwanted fluid shear stress due to translational movement of the membrane on the cells must be minimized. Setup must be straightforward, performable without excess training and not require more than an hour. The cell culture media should remain accessible during stretching protocols allowing for replacement and additions. Pricing must be competitive against other readily commercial solutions, such as the Flexcell System. Desirable, but not essential, capabilities include compatibility with an upright microscope and the ability to stretch up to six cell cultures in parallel.
